At Midsommer, we believe that partners can seek out therapy at any point and and at any stage in their relationship. Partners who are experiencing high conflict, communication issues, and relationship distress can benefit from therapy, as much as partners who need to process transitions, make decisions, or maintain healthy patterns in their relationship.
Coming together in a partnership requires that individuals navigate different family and cultural backgrounds, values, relationship history, emotional expression, expectations, and needs. Therapy provides a space to explore topics and concerns that are fundamental to the health of their relationship.
Session length: 60 | 90 minutes
Midsommer offers partners the opportunity to meet with their therapist in-person for an extended period of time, ranging from 4 hours to 8 hours depending on therapeutic goals, context of the presenting issue, and client needs.
60-minute sessions, while valuable, are simply not always effective for partners who desire and/or need a more "compact" version of relationship therapy. Intensives essentially jump-start and condense the important conversations and skills necessary for the health of your relationship that typically span over the course of 8 sessions into 1 day.
What do intensives look like?
For partners new to therapy, your intensive session will dedicate quite a bit of time in unpacking family-of-origin messaging around conflict, communication, and emotions, as we often repeat and carry over patterns from family into our present-day relationships - and in potentially unhelpful ways! Relational growth occurs when there is a combination of self-awareness regarding one's individual contributions to the relationship concern, and a genuine understanding of your partner.
For partners who have already been engaged in relationship therapy, your intensive will provide a space to go deeper in "one sitting" versus attempting to cover hard conversations over the span of weeks where momentum can sometimes be negatively impacted.
In both cases, Relationship Intensives are meant to:
Intensives are also valuable for those who are in a significant state of relational distress, have difficulty committing to weekly sessions due to scheduling concerns, and are navigating a time-sensitive/urgent concern.
Many partnerships are encouraged to continue weekly sessions following their intensive.
