We tend to think of intensives as an “extension” of your traditional 1:1 session with your psychotherapist. Intensives are also appropriate for individuals who are motivated to incorporate Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy. ERP is a type of behavioral therapy that exposes individuals to the very source of their obsessions, anxieties, and fears, without using maladaptive coping skills or acting on compulsions. For example, if you are recovering from an Eating Disorder and are seeking to confront forbidden foods and other sources of dietary restraint, ERP would allow for adequate time to plan the exposure, complete it in real-time, debrief, and process with your therapist.
